As Sabrina described vividly, even the initial subject line seemed ominous “Important news for the Senior House community” which then was followed with immediate mention of “troubling data” and “important decisions we have made.” Emphasis mine, because “we” was in no part the “Senior House community,” and I felt that discrepancy did well to set the tone for the body of the announcement. Here’s a screencap of the message: There is a good chance you’ve heard about this already, since a lot of people are talking about it. There is an article in The Tech regarding its announcement in general, and then another in which Dr. Cynthia Barnhart discusses the plan more depth. As I mentioned, there is an enormous amount of talk about this in public channels by residents, alumni, friends of the Haus, and others who are concerned. Even my mom texted me about it saying they e-mailed her too, as they did to every parent of a Senior House resident. I have definitely read more open-letters-per-time-unit since the release of this announcement than in any other equivalent length of time in life on this earth, which I think serves to illustrate that this has provoked some sort of controversy. The Concerns “Whether your hair is mousy brown or electric blue, whether you listen to classical concertos or cutting edge undiscovered bands, whether you like sushi or greasy diner food, trashy novels or great lit in dead languages, you’ll find those who share your tastes at Senior House. And if you can’t peg yourself on this either/or list, we’ll love you all the more. Senior House residents are happy to sometimes march off the beat of any drummer. And long after you’ve left MIT, you’ll always want to come home again.” The number cited in the e-mail looks drastic. Sixty percent 4-year graduation? This is pretty low, and it suggests there has to be something that is different about Senior House to explain this alarming statistic. If our aim is really to use proper statistical methods to diagnose a problem, we will first want to control for things not held equal. We might first look at demographic factors, as it is well-documented that students of certain demographic backgrounds are significantly more likely to take longer than four years to graduate. For instance, Senior House is one of the most inexpensive dorms to live in and has a disproportionately high share of low-income students, and in fact, the most expensive dorms McCormick, Maseeh, and Baker have the three highest graduation rates, whereas the cheapest dorms (East Campus, Random Hall, Senior House) have the lowest. On top of this, the House houses a disproportionately high share of underrepresented minority students, and according to the Chancellor’s office, 40% of its residents are LGBT. To the extent that the difficulties associated with these factors can explain the graduation rates, action targeted at the dorm itself is worthless, especiall y the problems faced by poor and minority students could be addressed directly with respect to their experiences. In addition to this, a number of people have pointed out that the openness of Senior House culture is likely to select for those who suffer from mental health difficulties, yet were it not for the tight-knit community they had had here, it would have been much worse for them. To ban freshmen is here not only bad science, but a disservice. Points like these are not my own, and they are just a fraction of those being voiced in response to this decision. Holly ’18 eloquently summarizes these and a number of other objections that the community has expressed in an open letter to the Chancellor, which I suggest you read for a more comprehensive account of why people are generally upset. We are alarmed at the complete lack of collaboration with residents in the process of this decision. We are disturbed that a predictably controversial decision was announced after most students had left campus for the summer, which comes across as a strategic effort to minimize protest. In general, it should be expected that policy very drastically affecting the situation of a large number of people should be drafted with their input, or at the very least with their knowledge.  I’ve never much liked surprises. (Still, the aggregate data has not been publicly released, so it is impossible for us to know what it actually says.) Others worry that this measure constitutes an existential threat to the community as we know it, with ominous references to Bexley, a dorm culturally similar to Senior House which was recently closed and torn down. I will also point out the fact that the cultures of dorms are built from different people with different values, which should easily affect graduation rates. The atmosphere at Senior House is anything but conventional, and many stray off the four-year path as a result of their personal uniqueness. I can name a number of fellow students who have taken time for startups, students who take semesters off to travel around the world, and students who punt the Protestant ethic and instead enjoy their lives here, at the cost of taking more time. The most creative people I know have felt trapped by the rinsing and repeating of the deadlines and the grind because their minds are somewhere else besides the five point oh and the six figures and the severe importance of demonstrating their worth to the rest of the world quantitatively. And personally, I love being at MIT! but I’m not about to drink Kool-aid from the firehose that tells me a failure to follow a cookie-cutter ideal is indicative of a personal shortcoming. I think this aspect of the culture was what drew me in, though it’s possible my time here has further “corrupted” me with a more confident sense of irreverence. The administration aims to protect the freshmen from this corruption; I don’t think that this is right. But you know, we could instead ignore all of this and come to the conclusion that those 20% of Senior House residents are junkies who drop out of school cause of Drugs (I hope I phrased this in a way that is obviously sarcastic, since I feel like this not far from what they actually would have you think). In seriousness, I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with making sure students are healthy, and looking to design policies to help them. We welcome the mental health trained faculty, and are passing around ideas and initiating dialogue about things we think we could improve upon as a community both socially and academically. But I do think that this interpretation of data on graduation to justify depriving freshmen of Senior House (and depriving Senior House of freshmen) is absolutely not acceptable, and I think this is the general consensus. Going Forward People now are looking to negotiate. Theyre trying to bring back the freshmen, and to modify the remainder of the plan in a way that is tailored to what students feel will best help them succeed, academically and/or personally. A group of residents already met with and spoke to Chancellor Barnhart on Friday. Robby ’18 was one of these people. What he said to me, after meeting with her in person, was something like: “I honestly think she wants to do good.” The immediate dilemma I then found myself in was whether to dismiss him in cynicism or in sarcasm; but see, Robby has an intuition that I really really trust, and he’s up in the front line in Cambridge, and I’m not. A lot of people are very upset and passionate and distrustful of the administration as was my own instinct but in the back of my mind I do keep considering the possibility that this solution will be successfully re-negotiated, because someone who genuinely wants to do good should listen to a resounding chorus saying “the ban on freshmen will actually do much more harm than good” and then accept an invitation that goes “let’s work together to figure out what will help.” It’s a belief in the mutual exclusivity of a genuine desire to craft policies that end up for the best, and the implementation of the policy as it currently stands. I suspect only one of these can end up being true, and if Robby is right, then I have hope. The Chancellor also admitted that not working with students and staff from Senior House to develop this plan was, in her words, a “mistake.” This recognition on her part is also very significant. Any rational person will agree that an enormous and fateful decision should not be implemented if the decision was made in a way that they believe was flawed. It’s like, imagine you declare the next president of a nation and the people collectively say, “what the hell?” Because apparently you had intended to run an election, but forgot, and you say, “whoops, that was totally a mistake.” …“But it seems like the winner was already announced on TV, so it’s too late to run the election now, yeah, sorry” ? or would it be, …“So let’s take a step back and fix this.” Like I said, my current hopes about the future of these negotiations involve a healthy dose of faith in the parties involved, and an underlying sense of amazement at the dedication of the community through all of it so far. There is something profound in the fact that people care so much, that they’re taking time out of their busy schedules to devote their attention to preserving something they value and ensuring that future generations can come to share in it too. It says there’s something worth keeping alive here. And it says there’s a lot at stake. In the mean time, here’s a nice  petition, and an email address for Dr. Barnhart. The subtle use of poppy seeds, black cardamom and roasted coconut in a lamb curry or the kale pakoras, the chick pea fritters lightly spiced offer ample stimulation to the taste buds that yearn to experiment more. The kitchen staff deserves compliments for their culinary excellence. The use of skilled techniques and the high quality ingredients make a unique mark and one cannot but marvel at the diversity of Indian cuisine. The use of white balsamic vinegar in a curry points at the Portugese influence on the Goan recipe. The curry had a surprising combination of ingredients with a balance of flavours that speaks volumes about the superior culinary skills of the chefs at the Tonka. The engaging manner in which the wait staff suggested and explained the items on the menu made it easier to choose from the long menu a combination that left our palates satisfied. And the restaurant was full to capacity with the service and cooking staff working in a smooth manner to cater to the diners who seemed to be enjoying the ambience, the food and the service to the fullest. Flavourful morsels of the food are enjoyed best when the ambience and the soft music that reminds you of India, the place where the delicious food is originally from. The gulab jamuns and the carrot halwa are desserts that are a wonderful close to a meal that is a gastronomical delight. Both the decadent desserts are melt in the mouth delicacies that are prepared fresh every morning. The use of milk and ghee in the desserts lend a creaminess to the desserts that is difficult to ignore and stays on your palate for a long time. Black Representation in Postbellum Era Art Following the abolition of slavery in 1865, it took a substantial amount of time for the representation of African-American people in American art to establish itself beyond the grotesque and the caricatured. Before slavery and the plantations were outlawed due to the civil war, American representation of blacks were shown as cartoon caricatures; as generic, racial stereotypes with no individuality of their own. This is demonstrated by a number of artworks prevalent at the time. Blackness was either relegated to the sidelines of the paintings, sculpture and engravings, or else excluded completely from the image. And although the outlawing of slavery was done in order to generate equality and liberty across the United States, racism was still prevalent, and it would also take some time before the actual identity of blackness in the United States managed to transcend that of an oppressed, racial stereotype, and began to take on and repr esent a history and a culture of its own, instead of merely providing the negative for the representation of whiteness. A great many critics argue that this breakthrough was made ironically by a sculpture made and funded by white people, in the Shaw's Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Despite Saint-Gauden's obvious inclinations towards racial stereotyping in words (his memoirs justify this statement), thanks to a number of coincidences, his artistic credibility, and the amount of time he was given to produce this sculpture, he managed to represent blackness not as caricatured, but as a disparate but unified whole. But some critics of the Shaw Memorial still uphold the belief that it is inherently racist. In the following essay, I will look briefly at the history of black representation in the art of post-bellum America, than engage in a closer analysis of the Shaw Memorial, in order to see exactly what is being represented and how. Monumental sculpture in partic ular had a great history in providing people with allusions to the real, held as less of an illusion than the representations made in other arts, such as painting. The representation of Apollo in the famous sculpture had provided people with a benchmark for human aesthetic beauty for thousands of years, and sculpture seemed conducive to the production and the replication of this ideal human form. This has serious implications for the evolution of how Black American slaves in postbellum America were represented. Kirk Savage suggests that: "Sculpture's relation to the human body had always been more direct and intimate than painting's: the sculptor's main task was not to create illusions on a flat surface but to reproduce three-dimensional bodies in real space." Both natural and synthetic zeolites are basically composed of aluminosilicates they may differ in the Si/Al ratio and pore sizes. Zeolites   as defined by the mineralogist community Ê »ÃŠ » is a crystalline aluminosilicate with a 4-connected tetrahedral framework structure enclosing cavities occupied by large ions and water molecules both of which have considerable freedom of movement permitting ion exchange and reversible dehydration. Ê ¼ÃŠ ¼[6]. Fig1 The tetrahedral structure of these micro porous aluminosilicates is of the form   where T can be either Al or Si. The silicon based framework () structure is uncharged or neutral but when Al is introduced into this structure () a negative charge is induced due to shortage of electron from the Al with valence of   taking the place of Si with . This has to be neutralized by extra cations attaching themselves to the structure [5]. In summary one can say the stability of the zeolite structure depends on the ratio of Si/Al. with higher ratio of these elements the zeolites have better stability for example in acidic environments. For Si/Al ratio 10 the framework may be considered as having high silica. Zeolites may have the following structural formula.  ..[5] .Where the first part represent extra framework cations, the middle term is the framework and the last part is the sorbed phase. Zeolites are unique considering their inherent physicochemical properties and a lot of researchers and scientists worldwide have developed interest in exploiting and utilizing the valuable properties of these minerals since from their first discovery. The name zeolite is of Greek origin simply meaning boiling stone considering the facts that water is fast lost from it when heated [1] and this is an important property of the zeolite opening door for many applications. These minerals occur in nature in sedimentary deposits and can also be artificially made in the laboratories [6], pore sizes being determined by intended purpose and application, in fact this is one of the advantages of the synthetic zeolites. They exist in 3D structures [8] with cavities that   houses   cations, organic and water molecules. The structure of the zeolite is not affected when elements and ions are removed from their cavities. THE ZEOLITE STRUCTURE. They are generally micro porous and the micro porosity plays an important role in the characteristics of the zeolites. The important and unique property of zeolites that distinguishes it from other structures is the formation of tetrahedron which can be connected to each other by bridging oxygen to form chains. A list of about 133 different framework structures has been identified [6]. The fundamental criterion for identification is the framework density which is the tetrahedral connected atoms per 1000Ã…. There are 21T atoms per 1000Ã… for porous tectosilicates. The structural composition can be changed by introducing metals such as Ge, B, Zn, and P. the basic structure of the zeolites can be separated into two broad classes. I) the basic tetrahedron which is the initial building block and ii) the composite consisting of many units joined together [6,1]. The unit cell which is built up by repeating itself in the format   where T represents cations that is Al or Si etc and th ey are in turn connected to oxygen atoms at the corners. FIG2. In the basic building block each tetrahedron is connected to adjacent one by abridging oxygen eg. T-O-T. The angle between T-O-T does vary from 140 to 165 degrees for silica tetrahedra[6]. Angular variations give variety of zeolite framework types. Boron and zinc are the smallest and largest cations found attached to the zeolite structure with 1.44Ã… and 1.95Ã… bond sizes. Generally zeolites has a small range of pore sizes ranging from (1-20Ã…)[3], to be specific for FAU-type the pore size is 7.4Ã…, for alumophosphates the value is 12.1Ã…. Pore sizes greater than 20Ã… -500Ã… are mesoporous materials while greater than 50nm are considered as macroporous materials.[5]. NATURAL ZEOLITES First discovered in 1756 by A.F. Cronstedt, it occurs by natural geological phenomena such as volcanic eruptions that has taken place in the earth crust and are found usually in alkaline lake sediments and soils.[5]. The basic composition is lower Si/Al ratio. Clinoptilolite with chemical composition (Na,k)(Al  3) is one of the most important zeolites among the list of over 40 natural zeolites because of its fine grains. The clinoptilolite and another natural zeolite Mordenite (MOR) have great agricultural and sorbent applications. Some natural zeolites are inherently toxic causing lungs related illnesses [5] and should be handled with extra care. Another example of natural zeolite is Mutinaite whose artificial counterpart is the ZSM-5[4]. This mineral has a Si/Al ratio of 7.6 which seem to be the highest value for natural zeolites[4]. In addition the mineral is thermally stable with a high rehydration capacity. Natural zeolites when exposed to environmental conditions for a very l ong time may lose a higher percentage of water content in their channels and left with residual amount. Channels could be destroyed by high rate of water removal from it. Other frameworks such as alumophosphate consist of tetrahedral units and are classified as zeolites[5] and this framework is uncharged as was the case with aluminosilicate frameworks for this reason the channel contains only water molecules.fig 3 ARTIFICIAL ZEOLITES. The natural zeolite is inflexible in terms of their atomic structure and hence the properties cannot be altered this limitation calls for the need for synthetic counterparts that could be used for any desired application. For example one can make a zeolite with larger cavities than the natural one to suit certain application and it is worthy to note that some of the synthesized zeolites have not known natural counterparts [1]. The following methods are commonly used for zeolites synthesis. 1. Hydrothermal synthesis: the components are mixed in water to form aqueous solution and heated from room temperature to 300 degrees with PH maintained at 7. Some natural zeolites cannot be synthesized because their structure and stoichiometry is very difficult to predict [5,6]. In the synthesis of aluminosilicates cabosil is used as the source of Si and Al while oxy hydroxide is the alumina source with organic cations and alkali hydroxide forming the template and base respectively. The template can control the desired pore diameter and the shape of the zeolite to be made. The template can be removed by thermal decomposition. 2. High pressure hydrothermal: analogous to the natural phenomenon zeolites can be synthesized in the laboratories under the influence of high temperature, pressure and the presence of water. The magnitude of these parameters range from 12hrs to 72 days for time taken during synthesis, 100bar to 4kbar is the applied pressure range and from 25 degrees to about 700 degrees is the temperature [5]. Laumontite is an example of zeolite synthesized by this process. The Si/Al order in zeolite framework as well as crystal behavior can be influenced by synthesis temperature. The disadvantages associated with this method are the use of high pressure and the longer process time. The synthesis of zeolite is one very important way of dealing with the issue of how to dispose sludges generated from paper industries, drainages and coal processing[2]. The good work of Dr Teruo Henmi helped saved the environment by converting ashes from these sludges to zeolites which has a lot of uses covering areas in agriculture, public health and cosmetics etc[2]. so artificial zeolite is now seen as an avenue to recycle wastes ashes which use to be an environmental problem. Through him, the dance scene has changed all across the globe. Many seek not only to learn the steps but to execute them with as much precision and style as he did. This proves that his success as such an influential dancer was not only due to the aesthetic value of his steps but can also be attributed to the amount of entertainment value he possessed when he performed them.
